2022 Republic of Korea Excellent Patent Award - AutoL
Development of LiDAR Sensor, the 'Eyes' of Autonomous Driving - Hankook ilboAutoL (CEO, Lee Yong-sung) is a startup founded by researchers who led the research on LiDAR for autonomous driving at the Hyundai Motor Company Central Research Institute. It was established through Hyundai's in-house venture system and was spun off last year to specialize in researching, developing, and manufacturing LiDAR sensors for autonomous driving. As the demands for autonomous driving have advanced, there are limitations to implementing Level 3 or higher autonomous driving technology using only existing cameras and radar sensors. LiDAR, which uses light to detect objects and measure distances in front, plays a crucial role as the 'eyes' of the vehicle in Level 3 or higher autonomous driving. However, LiDAR suitable for autonomous driving requires a minimum of 16 channels (areas separated vertically when detecting objects), and as the number of channels increases, the volume and price of LiDAR increase exponentially.AutoL has developed the high-resolution LiDAR G32, satisfying the durability and reliability requirements for automotive use without additional components or volume increase, through a patented technology of 'LiDAR with an inclined mirror structure.' G32 is expected to be supplied at 1/5 of the price of existing LiDAR with the same specifications when mass-produced, by maximizing resolution and detection distance while simplifying the product's structure.한국일보 - https://www.hankookilbo.com/News/Read/A2022122421340005415?did=NA

Autonomous Vehicle 'Eyes'... Distinctive LiDAR Technology by AutoL (Money Today Broadcasting)
[Anchor Comment] LiDAR is considered a core technology, the 'eyes' of the car, in autonomous driving technology. However, traditional LiDAR faced challenges such as large size and limited durability, making it difficult for universal application. AutoL, a startup spun off from Hyundai, has developed LiDAR technology that addresses these issues and is making a mark in the autonomous driving market. This is reported by Journalist Jo Hyeong-geun.[Article Content] A device attached to the vehicle detects obstacles to assist the driver in autonomous driving.Developed by AutoL, a startup spun off from Hyundai, this LiDAR sensor is used in the Level 3 autonomous driving stage.Unlike radar using radio waves, LiDAR detects objects using light and measures distances.LiDAR is considered a crucial technology for autonomous vehicles, filling the resolution gap left by radar.[Lee Yong-sung, CEO of AutoL: With the recent opening of the high-level autonomous driving market, there is a need to more precisely understand the driving space of vehicles. LiDAR sensors are gaining attention as a solution.]However, traditional LiDAR has been criticized for requiring multiple transmitter-receiver modules to increase sensitivity, leading to high costs and increased size, impacting the vehicle's exterior design.AutoL has successfully focused on solving these issues by developing a more affordable and compact LiDAR.[Lee Yong-sung, CEO of AutoL: We have developed technology that can secure detection performance and resolution with just one transmitter-receiver module. As a result, assembly is completed with a single alignment, significantly reducing the price and volume.]AutoL is developing products that can be integrated into car lamps to avoid compromising the vehicle's exterior design. They are also working on high-performance LiDAR tailored for Level 4 and Level 5, the highest levels of autonomous driving.[Lee Yong-sung, CEO of AutoL: In the next 2-3 years, it is expected that high-performance LiDAR with over 100 channels will be needed. Therefore, we are also conducting advanced development for such products.]AutoL plans to expand its unique LiDAR technology into areas such as mobility and robotics.Reporter, Jo Hyeong-geun, Money Today Broadcasting.
